Mangrove Pencils by Curtis Whitwam
Watercolor original on archival black cotton paper. Painted using pearlescent pigments containing mica crystals. Painting: 8x10 Framed: 14x16.
The Red Mangroves produce long “propagules” sometimes called “pencils”. These propagules are fully formed plants that fall from the tree in a dormant state until they root down into new soil. They can stay dormant for up to a year floating across vast stretches of water before finding new soil to root down.
