Ash Glaze Vase by Patricia Burrows
This is a wheel thrown and altered porcelain vase which has been glazed using a combination of two glazes, one of which is an ash glaze. The ash glaze, originally developed in China around 1500 BC, is made from wood. Minerals and metals in the ash, typically iron and magnesium, produce the colors. When fired, the glaze melts unevenly on the piece, creating a liquid pattern. The piece was fired in reduction to create additional texture in the colors. 9 x 5.5 inches.
